More Info
- Always thought that Southeast Asia played the SNES trough NTSC Super Famicom imports from Japan like most of Asia, but I recently stumbled on an instagram post made by user “durian_omegarod” where he showcases both the Hong Kong Version Super Famicom and what caught my eye, A PAL “For use only in Southeast Asia” Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

- from what it seems it’s just a PAL/European SNES Super Mario World set (The version of the box sold specifically in countries like Germany and Italy that were imported to most other PAL regions) but just with the full English text and the “caution” that it was only for use in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Which for me makes some sense since Southeast Asia used PAL for its analog/composite video signals, which the imported Super Famicom was not natively programmed with since Japan uses NTSC-J.
- as you might have guessed considering the region it was released, the reason for the rarity of this “version” (or at least I assume that based on the lack of other images of this specific box and console I found) is that it most likely did not sell well at all in Southeast Asia’s Japanese import and Sega MegaDrive dominated 16-Bit Market, making this find a strange, nearly out of place version that oddly makes sense.
